Baneberry - seen between Madison Lake and Elysian

Baneberry stands out in the summer and fall because it doesn't get eaten. Baneberry is poisonous and most poisonous berries are left untouched by animals (and smart humans). From what I have heard about Baneberry, it would be difficult to be poisoned by it, because it is so bitter tasting, you would give up before you could get a lethal dose.

The Sakatah has both a Red and a White Baneberry. They are both bad for you. The White Baneberry is called "Dolls-Eyes". The reason, of course, is at maturity the white berries with black buttons at the bottom makes them resemble the eyes of an old China-doll.The red and white Baneberry plants are really separate species, if you notice the stems of the Red Baneberry, they are thinner than the White Baneberry and a different color.

You'll see Baneberry along the trail where it is shady and bushy. Oftentimes near Wild Grape. It's very common and hard to miss. Like most berries that remain uneaten, they are a very prominent feature in late fall.
