Mulberry - Mid-summer, between Elysian & Waterville

Mulberries in summer

There is a Mulberry tree somewhere on the Elysian-Waterville section of the Sakatah, my apologies for not knowing the exact location. I intend to find the location more specifically this summer (maybe a GPS coordinate), and get additional pictures in 2008 season.

I have only seen one Mulberry tree on the trail, although there are probably more.

The red berries are not mature, while the very dark berries are fully mature. The berries themselves have some taste, but not a lot. They are very seedy. The Minnesota DNR does allow picking of berries and eating. Just be sure what you are eating, and it is in the best interests of other trailgoers if you eat conservatively so that everyone can enjoy them. The maturity season is fairly quick, so you have to be fairly accurate when you are there, once again, I will post a more accurate date on this as well in the future. Mulberries appear to be fairly popular with the local birds.
